Hermeneutika al-Qur’an : Studi Sosio-Historis terhadap Ayat tentang Kesaksian Perempuan di Ruang Publik

Abstract

The issue of Qur’anic interpretation regarding women’s testimony in public which states that two men may be replaced by one man and two women has been the subject of debate in both classical and contemporary exegesis.  This study describes the interpretation of Surah al-Baqarah verse 282, which explains the status of women’s testimony in public spaces through a socio-critical approach, combining contextual exegesis and critical sociology. This study employs a qualitative method using a literature review approach. The findings indicate that the interpretation of the verse concerning women’s testimony in the public sphere within the classical exegetical tradition is inseparable from the patriarchal social constructs that surround the exegetes. The patriarchal bias of this interpretation is not textual in nature, but rather intertextual and contextual. This research contributes to the importance of a contextual exegetical approach based on gender justice in offering a more gender-just interpretation of the Qur’an without negating the authority of the sacred text.
