Abstract
The dominance of the modern strategic leadership paradigm which emphasizes effectiveness, competence, and the achievement of goals has the potential to sideline moral dimensions and the public good. This situation has prompted a study of the body of Islamic leadership thought as an alternative strategic paradigm. This study aims to describe the views of Imam al-Māwardī (974–1058 CE), a prominent Shafi‘i school Islamic political thinker, on Imārah al-Jihād and its relevance to contemporary strategic leadership. This qualitative study employs a literature review format. The research findings indicate that Imārah al-Jihād represents a leadership construct that integrates justice, courage, strategic competence, integrity, responsibility, and the public good. These principles have substantive relevance to contemporary strategic leadership through vision-oriented leadership, sound decision-making, leadership integrity, and social responsibility. These findings contribute to the development of an Islamic strategic leadership paradigm by situating strategic competence within a framework of ethics, morality, and the public good.
