Beyond Dichotomy: Synergy between Islamic Perspectives, Science, and Natural Disaster Mitigation
Main Article Content
Abstract
The phenomenon of natural disasters are often understood theoretically as calamities, trials, destiny, or even punishment, which also shape human patterns or attitudes in responding to them. This study aims to describe the thoughts of a prominent Qur'anic exegesis expert named Quraish Shihab on the integration of Islamic and scientific perspectives in responding to natural disasters. This qualitative study in the form of a literature review uses a descriptive approach and content analysis. Data was obtained through documentation techniques. The results of the study show that Quraish Shihab views the importance of cooperation between Islamic and scientific perspectives in responding to natural disasters. This is because natural disasters as natural laws (sunnatullah) can also be analysed through a scientific approach, but still followed by an Islamic theological approach and humanitarian values. This study contributes to the importance of collaborative-informative perspectives between religion and science as a paradigm and disaster mitigation strategy
